Cochran Primary School

The first part of Tanner’s student teaching experience was spent working with K-3 general music under Mrs. Natalie VanFleet. He had an amazing time observing, co-teaching, and solo-teaching all four grades, participating in school assemblies, creating lesson plans, managing bus duties, and making extremely meaningful connections with a rich and diverse community of kids. (See below for videos from this experience)

Tanner would also like to share his appreciation to Mrs. VanFleet for sharing her welcoming classroom and passionate mentorship!

Conducting Experience

Tanner has always been an avid musician, but the decision to study music education came shortly after co-founding and conducting his high school’s pep band. Since then, Tanner looked everywhere he could to find conducting opportunities and was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to conduct various choirs, small-ensembles, jazz bands, and athletic bands. He also held the position of Music Section Leader for two years with the Penn State Marching Blue Band and served as co-founder, president, event-planner, librarian, and conductor for the former Trumpet Ensemble at Penn State. Tanner studied conducting under Dr. Christopher Kiver and Professor James Gates.
